Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link

This marshy western gateway to Hungary is a land where myths and legends tell of the area’s mysterious past. Much may have changed since then, and today the National Park straddles the border with Austria, but the Fertő and Hanság areas remain outstandingly rich in natural treasures and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know...
• After a hundred years’ absence, there are ospreys nesting at Fertő?
• Early spider orchids, once thought to be extinct are now found again growing in the area?
• on the southern coast of Lake Fertő frog tunnel systems and wet passages ensure the safe spring and autumn migration of amphibians?
