Golf was introduced in Hungary 1909 and shortly afterwards became a popular pastime of many Hungarians. The true high speed development of the sport came between 1926 and 1936.
The Hungarian golf players achieved significant success at various times and were a viable part of the European golf life.
From 1952 to 1970 the political discrimination deeply influenced golf in Hungary and it was a sport non grata. After a long hiatus, the first Hungarian Golf Association was established in 1989.

Birdland Golf and Country Club is located in the popular spa resort, Bükfürdo, in a picturesque environment. The resort has wellness and fitness additionally to their golf course and offers opportunities for other leisure activities. The golf course is suitable for advanced, as well as beginner players.
The course is situated in Máriavölgy, about 30-40 minutes form Budapest city centre, on land occupied by the Habsburg family as a weekend retreat around 1845. The approach to the course and clubhouse is through a beautiful alley of 200 year old trees.
The 18 holes golf course, designed by Austrian golf architect G. Erhardt, was opened in June 1997. The fine shaping of the course was carried out by English construction company, Southern Golf. Great care has been taken by the architect in imparting his knowledge and vast experience in the beautiful design and conditions of the fairways and greens. The complex offers many amenities other than golf. A variety of additional resort activities include horseback riding, tennis, swimming and mountain biking. A professional kindergarten service is available on the weekends as well as a playground and a beautiful swimming lake where families can relax. The quality of the Country Club area is up to the highest international standards.
The nearest club to Budapest, this 18-hole course is situated in an idyllic nature reserve. The outstanding beauty of the site, complete with its views of the Visegrád hills is matched by the five-star luxury of the adjoining hotel, which also offers conference facilities, tennis courts and a riding area, not to mention the thermal spas.
This club is situated in the town of Hencse in the beautiful surroundings of the Zselic Nature Reserve to the South of Lake Balaton. To add to its charm, the course is not fenced off, so early risers may share the course with the local wildlife. Accommodation is available in the 19th century stately home - which includes a thermal bath - and the course restaurant serves up delicious seafood and fine wine from the Villany-Siklós region to the south under the shelter of huge sycamore trees.
Halfway between Budapest and Gyor the Old Lake Golf Club is within striking distance of both Bratislava and Vienna and also has its own hotel complex. The course is better suited to the amateur player than it's more illustrious, and expensive rivals.
